This Privacy Policy explains how the ProTerm Android application (the “app”) handles information. It applies to the app and to this page. By using the app you agree to this policy.

Overview

ProTerm is an offline-first SSH client and terminal. We do not operate a backend for it, we do not have accounts, and we do not collect your data. The app’s only network activity is the SSH connection you ask it to make, directly from your device to a server you choose.

1. Information we collect

We collect no personal or sensitive user data. ProTerm has no servers of its own, no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting, and no tracking.

We do not access, collect, use, or share:

  • your name, email address, or any account details (the app has no account system);
  • the hosts, addresses, ports, or usernames you save;
  • the passwords, passphrases, or SSH private keys you enter;
  • the contents of your terminal sessions, commands, files, or clipboard;
  • your location, contacts, files, photos, microphone, or camera;
  • device identifiers, advertising IDs, or usage and diagnostic data.

The app requests a single Android permission, INTERNET, and uses it only to open SSH connections that you initiate. It requests no other permissions.

2. Information stored on your device

ProTerm saves the following locally so the app can work. It stays on your device and is not sent to us:

  • Hosts you add (label, address, port, username, authentication method), in a local database on your device.
  • Secrets (saved passwords, passphrases, and imported private keys), encrypted on device with AES-GCM using a key held in the Android Keystore.
  • Known host keys, used for trust-on-first-use verification.
  • Settings (font size, theme, keyboard and clipboard preferences).

Android backup is disabled for ProTerm, so the developer does not copy this data to Google’s servers. You can remove it at any time by deleting hosts or keys inside the app, or by uninstalling the app.

3. How information is used

Information stored by the app is used only on your device, to operate the features you use: connecting to your hosts, authenticating, displaying the terminal, and remembering your settings. We do not receive or use it for any other purpose.

4. Sharing and disclosure

We do not sell, rent, or share your information, because we do not collect it. There are no third-party analytics, advertising, or data-broker SDKs in the app.

Two things are worth being explicit about:

  • Servers you connect to. When you connect over SSH, the data you send is delivered directly from your device to the server you configured. That server is your own machine or a third party of your choosing; we are not involved in that connection and cannot see it. Its operator’s privacy practices are their own.
  • Google Play. If you installed ProTerm from Google Play, Google may collect information related to the store, your device, and installs under Google’s own privacy policy. That collection is performed by Google, not by us.

We have no data to disclose to law enforcement or anyone else.

5. Data security

Sensitive values (passwords, passphrases, and private keys) are encrypted at rest on your device using AES-GCM with a key generated in and protected by the Android Keystore. Private keys never leave your device except as part of an SSH connection you initiate. The app verifies host keys explicitly (trust-on-first-use) and warns you if a known host’s key changes. As with any software, no method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure; you are responsible for the security of the servers you connect to and the credentials you choose to save.

6. Data retention and deletion

We do not collect your data, so there is nothing for us to retain or delete on our side. Data the app stores remains on your device, under your control, until you delete it in the app or uninstall the app. Because we hold no data, no deletion request needs to be sent to us.

7. Children’s privacy

ProTerm is a developer tool and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.

8. Your privacy rights

Privacy laws such as the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA), and India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) give individuals rights over their personal data, including access, correction, deletion, and objection. Because we do not collect or process personal data, we hold nothing to act on. If you believe we hold something about you, or you have a question about this policy, contact us at the address below and we will respond.

9. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the “Last updated” date above and publish the new version at the same URL. Material changes will be reflected in a new release of the app where required.
